HISTORY OF THE GALLERY

In 1995, the current Mayor of Caboolture Shire Council, John White, approached the current Artisans' Guild President Elaine Coggins with an offer to use part of the newly vacated Caboolture Fire Station. A proposal was hastily prepared, and accepted, to turn the space into an Art and Craft Gallery.

At the time, the Council was demolishing the old Library building in preparation for other construction works, and Guild members worked hard to recover many materials from the Library, including one of the Air Conditioning systems and ducting, and as many of the carpet tiles as could be removed from the floor. Also members acquired a set of obsolete plan drawers and a lot of old building material from refurbishments at the Council chambers. All these materials and a lot of hard work was used to refurbish the space and make a Gallery. John White was very generous financially as well, and assisted with many of the necessary items which could not be "acquired" from other sources.

The gallery was opened in 1996 by the State member and Council representatives and has gone from strength to strength since then. The images show some of the stages of the refurbishment.
